Humans are habitual beings and most things we do in life are the result of habits that we condition ourselves to over time. If you were to perform one task every day for a month it will become a habit. But, the problem with habits is they generally start with very small changes in our life and more often than not we don't even notice them. There's no doubt about the fact that the body changes as we age and weight control takes on a new meaning as fat is stored in places that we didn't have to worry about when we were younger. Our metabolism slows as we get older, we don't burn fat anywhere near as fast and the digestive system doesn't work as well as it once did. We tend to put off that bit of exercise for the slightest excuse.
